The Dirty Airplane Air Myth ✈️🦠

Think you’re breathing stale, germ-filled air on a commercial flight?

About This Video

Think you’re breathing stale, germ-filled air on a commercial flight? You are actually falling for one of aviation’s biggest myths.
To build modern airliners, aerospace engineers had to smash through a billion-dollar wall of physics: How do you safely ventilate a sealed metal tube packed with hundreds of people at 35,000 feet, where the outside air is a freezing minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit and lacks oxygen?
The genius solution starts with the engines. Extremely clean high-altitude air is pulled through the compressor stages (known as Bleed Air). This hot, compressed air is then cooled and mixed with cabin air. But to prevent the spread of germs, engineers installed the ultimate defense system: Hospital-Grade HEPA Filters. These advanced fiberglass matrix filters capture 99.9% of bacteria and viruses.
Combined with a system that pushes air straight down from the ceiling to the floor, the entire volume of air inside the cabin is fully flushed and refreshed every 2 to 3 minutes. That is a significantly higher fresh air exchange rate than your office or grocery store. You aren't flying in a sealed can; you are flying in a high-altitude medical cleanroom.
