How One Plane Changed the Fate of WWII

In 1943, every bomber mission over Europe was a suicide run.

About This Video

In 1943, every bomber mission over Europe was a suicide run. When the short-range escorts had to turn back, the 'Flying Fortresses' were left hauntingly alone in the clouds.

The bombers desperately needed a fighter that could protect them all the way to Berlin and back. Enter the North American P-51 Mustang. Designed in just 102 days, it wasn't perfect at first. But when paired with the legendary British Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, it became an unstoppable force.

Soaring at 30,000 feet and armed with six deadly .50 caliber machine guns, the Mustang shifted the control of the skies forever. It was a 102-day engineering wonder that proved the right aerodynamics can change the course of history.
